A Saudi source announced on Tuesday that the Kingdom would provide the Yemeni Presidential Council with $1.2 billion to support the country’s faltering economy.
Fighting has largely ceased with the Iran-allied Houthi militias in North Yemen over the past year, but the internationally recognized government based in Aden suffers due to currency devaluation and rising prices.
The situation in Aden and southern Yemen, in particular, has deteriorated since the Houthi militias targeted oil tankers at southern oil stations with several drone attacks, thereby preventing the government from exporting crude oil from there.
The Saudi source stated that the support would contribute to enhancing security and preventing military clashes. The source added that this would encourage all parties to engage in dialogue to reach a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis.
A Yemeni official said that the aid would be used to pay government salaries, provide fuel for power stations, and support food imports.
