On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called Iran’s President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian to congratulate him on his election victory, according to Saudi state media.
Both leaders praised the growing relations between their countries and emphasised the importance of enhancing cooperation across various fields, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
King Salman bin Abdulaziz also sent a congratulatory message to Pezeshkian, expressing hope for the continued development of ties between their nations and peoples.
After a seven-year diplomatic break, Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia and Shiite-majority Iran resumed relations under a China-brokered deal announced in March last year.
Despite backing different factions in conflicts such as those in Syria and Yemen, the two regional powers have shown increasing signs of rapprochement.
This includes exchanging ambassadors and foreign minister visits, and the late Ebrahim Raisi’s historic visit to Saudi Arabia last November for a joint Arab-Islamic summit on the Gaza conflict.
