Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has unveiled the launch of a Riyadh-based Global Water Organisation.
This organisation aims to integrate and enhance the efforts of countries and existing bodies in addressing water challenges holistically. This will be done through sharing and promoting technical expertise, fostering innovation, advancing research and development, enabling the establishment of priority water projects, and facilitating their funding. The overarching goal is to ensure the sustainability of water resources and amplify the opportunities for universal access.
This initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to tackling global water challenges and emphasizes its dedication to environmental sustainability. For decades, Saudi Arabia has led in producing, transferring, and distributing water, pioneering technological solutions to its challenges. It has also played a pivotal role in elevating water issues on the international agenda, evidenced by its contribution of over $6 billion in funding for water and sanitation projects across four continents.
The Global Water Organisation will collaborate with nations that are grappling with water-related challenges and prioritize water projects on their national agendas. Additionally, it will engage with countries possessing effective contributions and expertise in water solutions. This comes as predictions estimate the global water demand will double by 2050 due to the world’s population reaching approximately 9.8 billion.
Saudi Arabia, in partnership with member countries, aspires to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically ensuring water abundance and creating comprehensive impacts. Their collective efforts aim to pave the way for a secure and sustainable water future for all.
