Russian security services announced on Thursday that they had neutralized militants from the ISIS terrorist organization who were plotting an attack on a synagogue in Moscow, according to official Russian news agencies.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) revealed that a cell of the extremist group in Kaluga, southwest of Moscow, had planned to target Jewish worshippers in the capital’s synagogue.
The FSB statement, as reported by the TASS news agency, indicated that the terrorists engaged in armed resistance during their arrest, leading to their neutralization by the security forces.
The operation resulted in the discovery and confiscation of firearms, ammunition, and components for making improvised explosive devices.
The Zvezda news website, which has ties to the Russian military and security service, published a video showing what appeared to be the bodies of the militants inside a house, along with the seized weapons and ammunition. However, the FSB did not specify the number of militants killed in the operation.
The statement further noted that the militants were members of the Afghan branch of the ISIS terrorist group, though their nationalities were not disclosed.
Russian authorities frequently report thwarting attacks planned by terrorist groups. Earlier this month, the FSB announced the killing of six individuals suspected of belonging to ISIS in the southern region of Ingushetia.
