Russia’s naval and air defense forces have successfully thwarted attempted attacks by Ukrainian drones on the city port in the Crimean Peninsula, according to the governor of Sevastopol. The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday.
The Russian Defense Ministry later confirmed that “an attempted terror attack initiated by the Kiev regime with seven drones and two semi-submersible vessels on targets in the Crimea region near the city of Sevastopol was foiled this morning.”
Mikhail Razvozhaev, Moscow-appointed governor of Sevastopol, stated on the Telegram application that the attacks occurred over Sevastopol port, and the city’s Balaclava and Khersones areas.
Further, he mentioned that one drone was brought down over the sea, Russian electronic warfare units intercepted five aircraft, and two others were destroyed on the outer beach.
As of yet, there has been no comment from Ukraine regarding the attacks on the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
Ukraine does not generally claim responsibility for any attacks within Russia or territories controlled by Russia in Ukraine. However, it has stated in recent months that the destruction of Russia’s military infrastructure aids its counterattacks.
The ongoing tension in the region and the recent drone attacks underline the complex geopolitical dynamics between Russia and Ukraine. It also underscores the evolving nature of warfare technology and the increasing use of drones in conflicts. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, as these developments have significant implications for regional stability and international security norms.
