A Russian airstrike killed five civilians, including three children, in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib on Tuesday, according to medics and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The head of the White Helmets, a volunteer rescue group in Idlib, said the strike hit a residential area in the town of Armanaz around 10 p.m. local time.

The Observatory said the victims were members of the same family. The father, mother, and three children were killed, while a fourth child was injured and taken to the hospital.

The strike came amid a renewed escalation of violence in Idlib, where government forces and their Russian allies have been shelling and bombing areas controlled by rebel groups.

The Syrian government has been trying to recapture Idlib, the last major rebel stronghold in the country, since 2019.

The United Nations has called for an end to the violence in Idlib, warning that the escalation could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.
