Vasily Nebenzya, the Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Security Council, has emphasized the urgent need for the Council to discuss imposing sanctions on Israel due to its failure to comply with the Gaza ceasefire resolution during Ramadan.
During a session of the 15-member UN body on Wednesday, Nebenzya reiterated Russia’s stance, stating, “We remind you once again that non-compliance with mandatory Security Council resolutions must lead to sanctions against violators. We believe that the Council should consider this issue without delay,” as reported by IRNA, citing a Russian news agency.
Nebenzya highlighted the non-implementation of Security Council Resolution 2728, which called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during Ramadan, and stressed the necessity for the Council to explore the possibility of sanctioning the Israeli government.
Previously, Nebenzya urged Israel to emulate Iran’s approach, which he claimed does not seek further escalation of tensions.
Expressing deep concern over Israel’s ongoing operations in the Gaza Strip despite the Security Council’s previous decision demanding a ceasefire, Nebenzya condemned what he described as “blatant disregard by the Israeli leadership, with complicity from the United States, regarding a legally binding decision of the Council,” during a prior Security Council session.
