Russia continues its support for Libya in the aftermath of the devastating Mediterranean storm “Daniel.” The third Russian relief plane recently arrived at Benina Airport in Benghazi, carrying essential technical equipment to assist with the ongoing rescue efforts and response to the disaster.

This powerful storm, which originally formed in Greece, struck eastern Libya, resulting in significant damage and a tragic loss of life. The flooding caused by the storm has left thousands of people dead, and the situation is compounded by the presence of many individuals missing, likely trapped beneath the debris and mud caused by the floods. Furthermore, the dilapidated state of dams and a lack of early warning systems exacerbated the natural disaster’s impact.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the victims of the disaster and offered support to Mohamed Al-Manfi, the President of Libya’s Presidential Council, to aid in responding to the crisis. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has raised concerns about the high death toll resulting from the floods in eastern Libya, and the search for the missing continues.

The affected regions in eastern Libya, including Derna, the coastal town of Jabal Akhdar, and Benghazi, have sustained extensive damage. To manage the situation, authorities have implemented a curfew and temporarily closed schools.

Russia’s ongoing assistance represents an important part of international efforts to provide aid and relief to the affected areas in Libya following the catastrophic storm, as the country works to recover from this tragic event.
