Military and military-political cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan reflects the stability of allied relations, says a joint statement of the Russian and Kazakh presidents, Vladimir Putin and Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, adopted at their talks in Astana.

“In accordance with the principle of equal and indivisible security, military, military-technical and military-political cooperation is aimed at ensuring security and enhancing the defense capabilities of the two countries and is not directed against third parties,” the statement said. “Interaction on this track reflects the stability of allied relations and determines their strategic nature for decades to come,” the joint statement added.

Putin and Tokayev also expressed “satisfaction with the continuously increasing pace of joint work and active practical cooperation.” The two countries have an extensive mechanism of regular contacts at the level of the heads of state and government, the joint statement stressed.

The presidents also pointed to “productive contacts in the energy sector, including the joint development of large oil and gas fields.”

At the same time, the countries still have opportunities for further development of cooperation on a number of trajectories, for example, science and technology, the statement noted. “The potential of bilateral ties is contained in science-intensive and high-tech areas, including space activities,” the document said. “Russia promotes the creation of the Baiterek space rocket complex in Kazakhstan.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin is on a visit to Kazakhstan. He has already held talks with Kazakh counterpart Kasym-Jomart Tokayev.
