Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced today the expulsion of six British diplomats, accusing them of espionage and stating that their accreditation has been revoked.
The decision comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Western nations.
According to Russian state television, a senior FSB official revealed that the diplomats were being expelled due to their alleged involvement in intelligence-gathering and sabotage activities.
The FSB claims to have obtained documents indicating that the diplomats were sent to Russia by a division of the UK Foreign Office, which, according to the FSB, aims to strategically undermine Russia.
This move follows the recent announcement by the United States and the United Kingdom to provide an additional $1.5 billion in aid to Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials have been pressing for the use of Western-supplied missiles to target deeper inside Russian territory, a plea that may have further escalated the diplomatic rift.
As tensions between Russia and Western powers continue to rise, diplomatic expulsions and accusations of espionage are likely to strain relations even further, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
