Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, called on the UN to honestly assess the challenges Syria and humanitarian organizations face due to unilateral sanctions. Speaking at a Security Council meeting on the situation in Syria, Nebenzia emphasized the need for UN officials to publicly and honestly express the difficulties imposed on Syrians and humanitarian workers by these illegitimate sanctions.
Nebenzia urged the UN to send a clear message to Western donors about the need to lift these illegal unilateral sanctions and to actively support long-term development and reconstruction efforts so that the Syrian people can build their future without external interference.
Additionally, during negotiations with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, in Damascus on March 17, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad highlighted the continuous suffering of Syrians due to the inhumane sanctions imposed by the United States and its Western allies. Mekdad described the effects of these restrictions as catastrophic and called on the Security Council to facilitate the lifting of Western sanctions on Damascus and to end the illegitimate presence of American and Turkish forces on Syrian soil.
