Romania, a NATO member country, reported the discovery of what appears to be drone fragments on a farm near the Danube River and Ukraine’s border on Thursday evening.
Russia has been launching missile and drone strikes on western and central Ukraine during nighttime.
The Romanian defense ministry announced, “On the evening of March 28, 2024, remnants believed to be from a drone were found on farmland in Insula Mare a Brailei.”
The ministry, along with other national defense, public order, and security agencies, is investigating the incident.
Although NATO obligates mutual defense among its members in case of an attack, both NATO and Romanian officials, after similar incidents, have indicated there’s no evidence suggesting a deliberate intention to attack Romania.
Despite assurances of no intentional targeting, Romania, following an incident in December, called in the Russian ambassador to protest a “new airspace violation.”
In Tulcea county, a crater about 1.5 meters deep was located in a deserted area opposite the Ukrainian port of Reni, across the Danube, leading to Romania’s foreign ministry decrying Moscow’s “ongoing attacks.”
Meanwhile, Polish and allied aircraft were activated early on Friday after Russia launched missile strikes on Ukraine, according to the Operational Command of the Polish armed forces.
“Polish and allied aircraft are operating in Polish airspace, which may result in increased noise levels, especially in the southeastern part of the country,” the Command said on the social media platform X.
