Qatar and the United Nations signed the first supplementary agreement today to establish a United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Doha.

The Qatar News Agency reported that the agreement was signed on the Qatari side by Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al Thani, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the United Nations side, the agreement was signed by Dr. Ahmed Marai, representative of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Qatar.

The agency highlighted that this partnership is part of Qatar’s ongoing efforts and close cooperation with the United Nations in the field of humanitarian aid.

Qatar and the United Nations have a history of close cooperation, especially in humanitarian and development efforts.

Qatar has made substantial contributions to various UN initiatives, including a $100 million pledge to the World Food Programme for Yemen in 2021 and supporting the UN’s efforts in Afghanistan with a $25 million pledge in 2022.

Qatar has been active in promoting education through partnerships with UN agencies. Notably, the Education Above All Foundation, led by Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, collaborates with UNICEF and UNESCO to protect education in conflict zones.
