The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, welcomed British Foreign Minister David Cameron on Thursday for discussions on strategies to establish a lasting and prompt ceasefire in Gaza.
During the meeting, Cameron expressed gratitude on behalf of the United Kingdom for Qatar’s efforts and initiatives aimed at de-escalating tensions and bringing an end to the conflict in Gaza, as reported by Al Jazeera.
A statement from the Amiri Diwan highlighted the comprehensive discussions between Sheikh Tamim and Cameron. The leaders reviewed the robust bilateral relations between Qatar and the UK, exploring opportunities for further enhancement. Additionally, they delved into regional and international developments, with a particular focus on the evolving situation in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories.
The statement outlined that the primary agenda was centered around devising a plan for a permanent and immediate ceasefire. Cameron emphasized the necessity of this ceasefire to facilitate the release of hostages and the delivery of aid to Gaza. However, he acknowledged the challenges, deeming it “unrealistic” to expect a ceasefire while Hamas continues to launch rockets at Israel.
Furthermore, Cameron underscored the crucial goal of providing Palestinians with a secure state, stating, “We believe in the two-state solution.” The discussions aimed at finding a resolution that would safeguard Palestinian lives, protect civilians, and facilitate the effective distribution of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.
