On Monday, the Philippines identified its first mpox case of the year, and the health department is currently investigating whether it involves a new, more dangerous strain known as Clade 1b.
This particular strain has caused numerous deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has recently appeared in Sweden and Pakistan.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has elevated the recent increase in mpox cases to a global health emergency, the most severe warning it can issue.
The infected individual, a 33-year-old man from the Philippines, had not left the country, according to the health department. His infection was confirmed by a government hospital on Sunday.
Authorities are now waiting for genetic sequencing results to confirm if he has the Clade 1b strain.
The man began showing symptoms over a week ago, starting with a fever and later developing a noticeable rash across various parts of his body. Laboratory tests on skin samples confirmed the presence of monkeypox viral DNA.
This incident marks the tenth confirmed case of mpox reported to the Philippine health authorities, with the previous case noted in December of the previous year.
The health department is also revising its mpox guidelines to prompt individuals with symptoms to seek medical advice and testing.
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa assured the public that the health system is capable of managing the situation and promised to keep the community well-informed.
