Following Washington’s veto of a Palestinian bid for full UN membership, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced on Saturday that the Palestinian Authority would reassess its ties with the United States.
Abbas conveyed to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA that the leadership would take steps to safeguard the interests of their people, cause, and rights.
The Palestinian Authority president’s office criticized the US veto as “blatant aggression,” heightening tensions in the region.
Despite the setback, Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour affirmed their determination, emphasizing that the resolution’s failure would not weaken their resolve.
Hamas accused the US of obstructing international efforts and siding with the occupation, urging the global community to support Palestinians’ legitimate right to self-determination.
Egypt joined the chorus of criticism against the US, emphasizing the international community’s responsibility to end the occupation and achieve a just solution to the Palestinian issue.
The US veto was anticipated before the vote, which occurred amid Israel’s prolonged conflict with Palestine. Twelve countries supported the resolution, while Britain and Switzerland abstained.
