Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership welcomed the humanitarian ceasefire agreement on Wednesday, renewing calls for a comprehensive halt to Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.
Hussein Al-Sheikh, Secretary of the PLO Executive Committee, stated, “President Mahmoud Abbas and the leadership welcome the humanitarian ceasefire agreement and appreciate the Egyptian and Qatari efforts made in this regard. We reiterate the call for a comprehensive halt to Israeli aggression, the introduction of humanitarian aid, and the implementation of a political solution based on international legitimacy leading to the end of the occupation and the realization of the Palestinian people’s freedom, independence, and sovereignty.”
Egyptian and Qatari efforts successfully brokered a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, announcing a four-day humanitarian truce extendable further. This breakthrough followed weeks of intensive contacts and negotiations to de-escalate tensions and facilitate the entry of urgent medical and food supplies into Gaza.
The agreement marks a significant step in efforts to reduce ongoing Israeli-Palestinian tensions, potentially leading to further humanitarian truces and prisoner exchange deals.
American, Egyptian, and Qatari efforts over more than two weeks culminated in this agreement, with shuttle diplomacy and meetings in Cairo involving Israeli officials and Hamas leaders, fully coordinated with the U.S. to overcome obstacles to the ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal.
