Riyad Mansour, Palestine’s Ambassador to the United Nations, emphasized that the International Security Council has failed to fulfill its responsibilities to stop the war. He urged the United Nations General Assembly to take responsibility for achieving peace after the Security Council failed to halt the aggression on Gaza.
Speaking to “Cairo” news channel, Mansour stated, “The Security Council has let down all the countries in the Middle East by not implementing the will of the international community and the relevant resolutions, especially Resolution 2735, which calls for a ceasefire.”
He mentioned that Palestine is preparing a proposal to be submitted to the United Nations regarding the illegality of the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, asserting that the occupation is illegal and must end as soon as possible. He highlighted that the General Assembly should take escalatory measures against the Israeli occupation. He also noted that hundreds of thousands are protesting in Tel Aviv, holding Netanyahu responsible for obstructing a detainee exchange deal.
International efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, led by the United Nations, have been marked by intense diplomatic activities and resolutions. Recently, the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. This resolution was adopted with the support of most member states, highlighting the urgency for a ceasefire during Ramadan and calling for the unconditional release of all hostages and ensuring humanitarian access to Gaza.
The resolution was described as aiming for a durable end to the conflict, not just a temporary pause, emphasizing the need for a sustainable peace that would prevent further hostilities. The motion proposed a phased approach to ceasefire, starting with an immediate cessation of hostilities, followed by comprehensive humanitarian aid delivery, and eventually leading to broader political solutions aimed at a lasting peace.
The resolution also faced challenges, including some abstentions and concerns about the specifics of the ceasefire terms and the broader implications for a lasting peace . Despite these challenges, there is a strong global consensus on the need for an immediate halt to the violence and a substantial effort to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
