In a press conference on Wednesday, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced that Norway might consider closing its borders with Russia “if necessary.”
Støre further stated that Norway is closely monitoring the developments along Russia’s borders with Finland and Estonia, with a keen interest in the evolving situation.
This announcement comes in the wake of Finland’s decision to close all crossings on its borders with Russia until December 23, with the exception of the Raja–Jooseppi crossing located in the Arctic region, which operates for just four hours a day.
Finland and Estonia have accused Russia of creating a migrant crisis on their borders by facilitating the flow of migrants across the border crossings.
Russia has vehemently denied these allegations and lodged a formal protest with Finland, claiming that Finland’s measures “violate the rights of Russian and Finnish citizens.”
The escalating tensions in the region have prompted Norway to evaluate its own border policies, signaling growing concern over the situation’s impact on its neighboring countries and potential spillover effects.
