Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, confirmed on Monday in Rabat that Morocco has always believed that the United Nations’ umbrella is essential to legitimize any process and solution to the Libyan crisis. In press statements following discussions with the Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Khoury, Bourita emphasized that the UN has been closely following the Libyan file, aware of the diplomatic movements conducted by the Moroccan Kingdom within this context. He highlighted that this commitment has been manifested since the Libyan dialogue in Skhirat, where Morocco worked with the UN, as well as in Bouznika and all subsequent meetings.

Bourita explained that Khoury’s working visit to Morocco falls within the framework of ongoing coordination and consultation between the Moroccan Kingdom and the United Nations, as directed by Moroccan King Mohammed VI, ensuring that Morocco’s actions in the Libyan file are always in consultation and coordination with the UN, as it is the primary sponsor of the Libyan file process.

During the meeting, Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s consistent position on the Libyan crisis and the current suitable conditions in Libya to make progress in the Libyan process, stressing that Morocco has always been convinced that the solution to the Libyan crisis lies in the hands of Libyans and that addressing the legitimacy issue in Libya can only be achieved through elections.

Bourita also noted that the Moroccan Kingdom always works with all Libyan institutions in a framework of respect and credibility, maintaining positive relationships with all Libyan institutions and parties, emphasizing the need for a resolution to the Libyan crisis due to its significant impact on the security and stability of North Africa and the Sahel region.

The discussion with the Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya was frank and positive, stemming from a shared conviction that cooperation and consultation are necessary to advance this process
