The Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration has reported that over 323,000 Moroccans are registered in the Spanish social security system as of the end of 2023.
According to the ministry overseeing the social security sector, Moroccans continue to lead the ranking of foreign workers from outside the European Union who contribute to Spain’s social security system.
They are followed by Colombians with 175,570 individuals and Venezuelans with 148,928.
Based on the aforementioned ministry’s data, among foreign nationals, Romanians occupy the top position with 333,334 individuals, surpassing Moroccans with 323,143, and Italians with 175,743.
The total number of foreign nationals affiliated with the Spanish social security system reached 2,668,776 during the twelve months of 2023, marking an 8.5% increase compared to 2012, which translates to more than 208,057 active individuals. This sets a new record according to the ministry’s estimates.
Overall, foreign workers accounted for 13% of the total social security affiliates by the end of the previous year.
Among the total foreign workers contributing to the Spanish social security system, nearly 1,806,763 about hail from countries outside the EU, while 826,013 originate from EU member states.
As such, Moroccans maintain their position as the largest legal foreign community residing in this Iberian country.
