Mali’s ruling military junta has leveled accusations against neighboring Algeria, asserting that the latter has engaged in hostile actions and interfered with Mali’s internal affairs.
Reports from Reuters indicate that the military junta has promptly terminated the 2015 peace agreement with separatist groups in Algeria. This decision follows concerns raised by sources close to the Algerian government over Colonel Assimi Goita, the military governor in Bamako, forming an alliance with the “Wagner” militia, known to have affiliations with Russia.
In a significant move last November, Malian forces, with the assistance of the militia, swiftly seized control of Kidal, a crucial stronghold for armed opposition seeking autonomy in the north. Algeria views these actions as a violation of the peace agreement signed on its soil in 2015. Additionally, Algeria condemns Goeta’s military advancements and the use of advanced weaponry provided by Wagner, considering them to undermine international mediation efforts aimed at resolving the conflict. Algeria plays a pivotal role in these mediation efforts.
Recent statements from Goeta regarding the internal settlement process suggest a disregard for the peace agreement and international mediation efforts, further exacerbating tensions between Mali and Algeria. These developments raise concerns about regional stability.
