In a significant appeal at the United Nations (UN), Intisar El Tamzinie, the Chargé d’Affaires at Libya’s Permanent Mission, urged for fundamental reforms to the international financial system and revisions to global economic governance mechanisms.
Speaking at the annual general discussion of the Second Committee of the General Assembly, El Tamzinie highlighted the urgent need for a more effective mechanism to address the debt crisis and to provide long-term financing that fosters sustainable development, especially given the widening financial gap.
El Tamzinie also called for cooperation from countries where Libyan funds have been illicitly transferred, to assist in uncovering and recovering these assets.
This recovery is aimed at utilizing the funds to enhance service sectors within Libya.
Furthermore, she addressed steps taken by the government regarding illegal migration, emphasizing the significance of the Mediterranean Migration Forum held in Tripoli, which saw participation from 28 African and European nations.
She stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of migration by fostering genuine development in countries of origin, in collaboration with destination countries, while also tackling networks involved in smuggling migrants.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, announced that Moscow is not ready to extend the mandate of the United Nations mission in Libya for a long period as long as a new head has not been appointed.
During a session of the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, Nebenzia stated, “We regret the prolongation of the transitional period (in the mission) following the departure of Abdullah Bathily (from the position of Special UN Envoy).”
He continued, “We all understand that no matter how hard its former employees work, the mission cannot fulfil its important tasks of supporting the national dialogue without a new permanent head, agreed upon by the Security Council.”
