Abdul Hamid Al-Dbeibeh, the Libyan head of the interim National Unity Government, expressed deep concern on Wednesday about the news coming from Niger, which threatens the stability of the neighboring country.
In a Facebook post, Al-Dbeibeh affirmed his commitment to the principles of the African Union, which reject unconstitutional changes of governments, stating, “We stand with the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in their call for the restoration of stability and the reestablishment of Niger’s democratic institutions.”
He also called for an immediate halt to these military actions, which he mentioned that undermine the security and stability of the region and pose a source of concern for all neighboring countries and the international community as a whole.
Earlier today, Musa Al-Koni, a member of the Presidential Council, condemned the “attempt to destabilize Niger,” a country that is a “neighbor and brother,” considering that dragging the country into conflict could “shatter the stability of the entire region.”
Today, the presidential guard in Niamey detained Niger’s President, Mohamed Bazoum, after failed negotiations, according to a source close to the presidency.
The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated that after the talks, the presidential guard refused to release the president and gave the army a deadline, due to a state of displeasure among some members of the presidential guard who prevented access to the presidential headquarters in Niamey.
