Prime Minister of Libya‘s Government of National Unity, Abdel Hamid al-Dbeibah, has announced the temporary suspension of Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush, pending an investigation into her actions.

The decision comes after Libya’s Presidential Council requested that Prime Minister al-Dbeibah provide clarification regarding al-Mangoush’s recent meeting with the Israeli Foreign Minister in Rome.

This request was communicated via a letter sent by the Presidential Council to the head of the national government, according to Presidential Council spokesperson, Najwa Wahiba.

Following the council’s letter, it was decided that al-Mangoush would be suspended from her position pending an investigation into the matter.

Prime Minister al-Dbeibah has appointed Youth Minister Fathallah al-Zani to temporarily oversee the functions of the Foreign Ministry during the period of the investigation.

The suspension of Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush marks a significant moment in Libyan politics, particularly given the sensitive nature of her recent diplomatic engagements. The forthcoming investigation is likely to shed more light on the situation, with potential implications for Libyan foreign policy moving forward.

Libya has been grappling with political instability and conflict since the fall of its long-standing ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Multiple governments, militias, and foreign actors have been involved in the struggle for power and resources, leading to a complex and fractured political landscape.

Amidst this chaos, the Government of National Unity (GNU) was formed in March 2021, aiming to unify the various factions and bring stability to the country. Headed by Prime Minister Abdel Hamid al-Dbeibah, the GNU was internationally recognized and was tasked with leading the nation to general elections.

Najla al-Mangoush, who had served as Libya’s Foreign Minister, is one of the key figures in the GNU. Her role has been crucial in negotiating with foreign entities and representing Libya in the global arena. She was involved in various diplomatic activities, which makes her suspension an issue of great importance and interest.

The triggering event appears to be al-Mangoush’s recent meeting with the Israeli Foreign Minister in Rome. Given the complexities of Middle-Eastern politics and the historical lack of formal diplomatic relations between Libya and Israel, this meeting raised eyebrows in both domestic and international circles.

Libya’s Presidential Council, which acts as a collective head of state and supervisory body over the GNU, took immediate notice of this event. They formally requested an explanation from Prime Minister al-Dbeibah, which subsequently led to the Foreign Minister’s suspension.

Currently, Najla al-Mangoush is under investigation for her recent diplomatic activities. The exact details and scope of this investigation are not yet public, but it is expected to delve into her recent meeting and potentially other actions she may have taken during her tenure.

The investigation will likely be a determining factor in whether Najla al-Mangoush will resume her role or face further actions. The interim charge of the Foreign Ministry has been given to Youth Minister Fathallah al-Zani. This sudden change could potentially influence the country’s foreign policy and diplomatic stance in the coming weeks.

The suspension of Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush has far-reaching implications for Libya’s domestic and international politics. With an investigation underway, all eyes will be on the findings and how they will influence Libya’s foreign policy moving forward.
