Khalifa Haftar, the commander-in-chief of the Libyan National Army, received a delegation from the United Nations at his office at the General Command headquarters in Benghazi on Tuesday, led by the UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batile.
The army’s media office stated that during the meeting, the latest political developments on the Libyan scene were discussed, emphasizing the necessity to push towards holding the presidential and parliamentary elections.
On the other hand, UN Envoy Abdullah Batile, through his Twitter account, stated that he had fruitful discussions with Marshal Khalifa Haftar about the current political situation. They agreed on the necessity to address controversial issues in the election law projects.
They also stressed the importance of participation and acceptance by all related Libyan institutions and main parties to reach a political settlement that paves the way for successful and inclusive elections that meet the aspirations of the Libyan people.
Batile had issued a statement on Monday saying that he had informed the Security Council of his intention to gather the main Libyan institutions and actors, or their trusted representatives, to reach a final settlement on the most controversial issues through comprehensive negotiations and middle-ground solutions.
He added that in the coming weeks, he will intensify his communication with the main Libyan institutions, in addition to political and security leaders, to pave the way for these negotiations.
