Abdelsalam Al-Zoubi, the Deputy Minister of Defense for Libya’s Government of National Unity, engaged in discussions to enhance military cooperation with Turkey.

This dialogue took place during an official visit on Monday to the Republic of Turkey, alongside various officials from the ministry and the general staff.

According to a statement published on the government’s Facebook page, both sides explored ways to enhance military collaboration and develop training programs using the latest methods to improve the Libyan army’s efficiency.

Earlier on Monday, Imad Al-Trabelsi, the acting Interior Minister of the Government of National Unity, met with the Turkish Ambassador to Libya, Kuvvet Biçkiç. They discussed prospects for joint security cooperation and enhancing bilateral relations.

The Interior Ministry’s statement highlighted Ambassador Biçkiç’s reaffirmation of Turkey’s commitment to supporting Libya in its efforts to build its security institutions.

He emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries in facing shared challenges.

According to the latest figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of irregular migrants and asylum seekers detained in official detention centres in Libya has risen to over five thousand.

Libyan Central Television reported a significant increase in migrants who have been returned to Libya following rescue operations in the Mediterranean, totalling approximately 14,000 during the first eight months of this year.

UNHCR estimates indicate that the number of migrants held in official detention centres accessible to the agency has reached 5,103.

The surge is attributed to the detention of hundreds during multiple security operations conducted by local authorities in Tripoli and other locations.
