During a meeting with Ylva Johansson, a member of the European Commission for Home Affairs, Libya’s Interior Minister Emad Al-Trabelsi announced that Libya will host an international conference on migration next January.
The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the International Conference on the Global Alliance Against Migrant Smuggling in Brussels, Belgium.
Minister Al-Trabelsi emphasized that the Interior Ministry is addressing the phenomenon of human smuggling through a security plan aimed at combating human trafficking gangs.
This includes supporting the Illegal Immigration Combating Agency, the Border Guard, and the General Administration for Coastal Security to perform their duties in curbing irregular migration flows and securing land and maritime borders, according to a statement published on the Ministry’s Facebook page.
He noted that the treatment of illegal migrants during detention, accommodation, and deportation processes is conducted with respect for human rights, contrary to allegations made by fact-finding missions based on information from social media and other sources.
Al-Trabelsi requested that the European Union Commission member treat Libya as a key direct partner in combating illegal migration and fighting human trafficking, rather than relying on certain non-governmental and civil society organizations as intermediaries.
The statement added that Johansson accepted the Interior Minister’s invitation to participate in the upcoming international conference scheduled for January.
