Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah announced, on Wednesday, the suspension of primary and secondary education throughout Libya for ten days.

The decision takes into consideration the dire circumstances in municipalities devastated by flooding in the eastern cities.

In a brief statement posted on his official Facebook account, Dbeibah said he has decided to suspend schooling in both primary and secondary education levels across Libya for a period of ten days, considering the tragic conditions in the affected municipalities.

He also added that the Ministry of Education has been directed to develop a plan for the return of students in these municipalities and to provide temporary accommodations for them.

Furthermore, Dbeibah announced that a ship carrying 700 rooms is en route to the coast of Derna in the east to contribute to providing shelter for displaced individuals and rescue teams.

On Sunday, the Mediterranean storm “Daniel” hit several areas in eastern Libya, most notably the cities of Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Al-Marj, in addition to Susah and Derna.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Libyan parliament reported that the death toll from the storm and the accompanying floods had risen to at least 7,000 victims.

The casualty count is preliminary, and it is expected to increase in the coming hours.
