Libya is grappling with a significant surge in respiratory disease infections, with a notable increase observed since October of last year.

The Libyan National Center for Disease Control has reported a range of cases from mild to severe, including several fatalities.

The identified causes behind these infections is the influenza A virus, as indicated by samples collected by the center’s monitoring teams.

According to the statement from the National Center, the samples encompass both severe cases and acute respiratory infections, with a considerable portion of respiratory cases attributed to bacterial infections.

While confirming that cases of coronavirus infection are currently limited, the center noted that most infections among children result from syncytial virus infection.

Cautioning about potential future challenges, the center expressed concerns about a possible rise in coronavirus cases in the upcoming period, particularly due to the prevalence of new variants.

The statement highlights the likelihood of increased hospitalizations, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, individuals with chronic illnesses, those with compromised immunity, and others.
