Libya-Italy Flight Services to Resume Tomorrow
In an important development for both countries, the interim Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdulhamid Dbaiba, announced on Sunday that the first flight between Tripoli and Rome will commence tomorrow, Monday. This marks the resumption of flights between Libya and Italy after a decade-long suspension.
PM Dbaiba stated that the revival of flight services between the two nations is a significant step towards reopening the airspace for other destinations. Additionally, he emphasized plans to establish an air route between Rome and Benghazi.
The decision to lift the ban on Libyan civil aviation was conveyed to PM Dbaiba by the Italian government on July 9th. According to his tweet on his official Twitter account, the flights are set to resume in September. He expressed gratitude to the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and acknowledged the efforts of the transportation sector and the committee involved in achieving this breakthrough, aiming to facilitate travel for Libyan citizens.
Furthermore, a committee comprising members from the temporary Government of National Unity and the Italian side has agreed upon signing an agreement and memorandum of understanding, with plans to reopen the airspace between the two countries. They are also in the process of selecting Libyan and Italian carriers to operate flights to and from Italy, with the anticipated relaunch scheduled no later than August. This development signifies a positive stride in strengthening bilateral relations and fostering improved connectivity between Libya and Italy.
