A significant fire at the Tajura waste dump, located near a major power plant east of Tripoli, has caused a substantial disruption in electricity distribution.
The General Electric Company of Libya reported that the blaze, which erupted last night, led to the shutdown of the power transmission lines between Bir al-Osta Milad and Castelverde, severely impacting the region’s electricity supply.
The company warned that the fire poses a serious threat to the nearby power plant. If the blaze continues and gets closer to the plant, it could result in a complete loss of the facility, leading to extensive power outages.
The General Electric Company has called on all relevant authorities to intervene urgently to extinguish the fire and provide the necessary assistance to prevent a larger disaster.
They cautioned that any delay in addressing the fire could exacerbate the situation and increase potential damage to the electrical infrastructure in the area.
The Tajura waste dump is a significant site located in the eastern part of Tripoli, near key infrastructure including power plants.
The General Electric Company of Libya oversees electricity distribution across the country and has been managing challenges related to infrastructure and supply shortages.
The interruption in power transmission at a time of heightened instability can further strain Libya’s already fragile electricity grid.
Recent years have seen Libya grappling with political instability and economic challenges, which have affected various sectors including energy and utilities.
The ongoing conflict and internal strife have exacerbated issues related to infrastructure maintenance and emergency response, making incidents like the Tajoura fire particularly damaging.
