Libya’s Presidential Council President, Mohamed al-Menfi, held discussions today, Thursday, with the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, on the sidelines of the 33rd Arab Summit hosted in the Bahraini capital, Manama.
The media office of the Presidential Council President stated that the meeting delved into the evolving political landscape and the effective strategies to propel the political trajectory in Libya forward.
The agenda also encompassed the revitalization of various diplomatic avenues and the pursuit of consensus-driven solutions to realize the aspirations of the Libyan people for attaining a phase of enduring stability through free, fair, and transparent elections that engage all stakeholders.
Libya has been grappling with a complex political situation since the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, marked by factional rivalries, armed conflicts, and external interventions.
The country has experienced a tumultuous transition, with competing power centers vying for control, exacerbating governance challenges and impeding the establishment of sustainable peace and stability.
The UN-backed Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) has been instrumental in facilitating dialogue and negotiation processes aimed at achieving a comprehensive political settlement. However, obstacles persist, including disagreements over constitutional arrangements, security sector reforms, and the organization of national elections.
Against this backdrop, diplomatic engagements, such as the meeting between Libyan officials and the UN Secretary-General, play a crucial role in fostering consensus and charting a path towards a peaceful and inclusive political transition in Libya.
