Lebanon Files Complaint to UN Security Council Over Arouri Assassination

Lebanon’s acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati has instructed his Foreign Minister, Abdallah Bou Habib, to lodge an urgent complaint with the United Nations Security Council against Israel, following the assassination of Saleh Arouri, the Deputy Head of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), and his associates in Beirut.

Lebanese news outlets, quoting a statement from the office of the Lebanese Prime Minister, reported that Mikati “called Foreign Minister Bou Habib, requesting the urgent submission of a complaint to the UN Security Council.

This is in response to the blatant violation of Lebanese sovereignty by the explosion that occurred in Beirut’s southern suburbs last night, along with the recent Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty.”

Lebanon has previously filed several complaints against Israel in the Security Council on various issues, including the targeting of journalists in southern Lebanon and the occupation of border towns.

On Tuesday, a drone strike targeted Dahiyeh, a region in Beirut known for its Hezbollah presence, resulting in the death of Saleh al-Arouri, a high-ranking member of Hamas.

The strike, which was directed at a facility used by Hamas, caused six fatalities, as reported by Lebanon’s official news agency.

Hamas has acknowledged the death of al-Arouri, condemning it as a “cowardly assassination” carried out by Israel.

The group further stated that such attacks against Palestinians, whether within or outside of Palestine, would not weaken the resolve and determination of their people, nor would it hinder the ongoing efforts of their valiant resistance.
