Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday accused the United States and its allies of violating international law, including UN Security Council resolutions on Libya and Yemen.
In a press conference in Moscow, Lavrov said that the US and its allies in the UK and other countries had “violated all international laws and norms and UN Security Council resolutions.”
Lavrov stressed that “the UN Security Council did not authorize anyone to bomb Yemen, nor did it authorize the bombing of Libya.”
He added that “the West bombed Libya and turned it into rubble, and a huge number of refugees headed to Europe. This is no longer a problem for the United States. Any statements from Washington now have no basis in legitimacy.”
Lavrov also said that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had said in Davos recently that all countries in the Middle East want the US to be present and play a role in the region. However, Lavrov noted that Iraq, for example, has demanded that the US withdraw its troops, but the Americans have not done so.
Lavrov also said that the US is promoting its agenda around the world, and that the countries of the region should learn from this to insist on stability and security. He said that the main focus of efforts should be to establish a Palestinian state in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, living side by side with Israel in peace and security. “Without this, the events of violence that we are witnessing now in Gaza will repeat themselves,” he said.
Lavrov’s comments come amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, including the conflict in Yemen and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The US has been a major player in the region for decades, but its role has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years.
