Kuwait has reiterated its dedication to upholding human rights principles in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly concerning personal data privacy, intellectual property, education, and employment rights.
During the 23rd regular session of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Kuwaiti diplomatic attaché Jana Al-Dhafiri emphasized the country’s commitment to human rights and human dignity, despite the evolving modern landscape.
The session, as reported by the Kuwait News Agency on Sunday, highlighted the importance of discussing the latest developments in AI and technology.
Al-Dhafiri noted that the session covered crucial topics, indicating that the impact of AI extends beyond individuals to influence international relations.
She stressed the importance of utilizing AI tools for the benefit of users in fields such as healthcare, education, and the environment.
She echoed the call of Ambassador Talal Al-Mutairi, Chair of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission, for extraordinary measures, including engaging with stakeholders to establish a comprehensive global regulatory framework.
Furthermore, Al-Dhafiri underscored the need to address digital gaps related to data and innovation and to unify efforts to advance an open, free, and secure digital future centered on human rights.
Regarding Kuwait’s efforts to keep pace with global technological and digital advancements, Al-Dhafiri mentioned that the Kuwaiti government has established specialized bodies such as the Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority, the Central Agency for Information Technology, and the National Cybersecurity Center.
She highlighted that Kuwait is the global leader in developing the communications and information technology sector for the second consecutive year, with internet usage reaching 99.7% of the population.
Al-Dhafiri also pointed to Kuwait’s initiatives in AI, including the establishment of the first AI lab at Kuwait University in 2001 and the founding of Abdullah Al-Salem University in 2019, which offers academic programs focused on modern technology and AI techniques.
