The Kuwaiti Minister of Interior met with his Iraqi counterpart yesterday to discuss expanding security cooperation and coordination between the two countries, focusing on combating all forms of smuggling and infiltration through their border crossings. The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior stated that Sheikh Fahd Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah held a meeting with the Iraqi Minister of Interior, General Abdul Amir Kamel Al-Shammari, to explore ways to enhance security relations. The meeting emphasized security coordination and information exchange to strengthen their grip on preventing smuggling and infiltration at their shared border crossings. Sheikh Fahd expressed gratitude to the Iraqi minister for efforts to boost security cooperation between the two nations.

Previously, the Amir of Kuwait and the Crown Prince also received the Iraqi minister, underscoring the high level of diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Recent developments regarding the security situation at the Iraq-Kuwait border have been taking place since mid-2023. These developments include ongoing efforts by both countries to resolve disputes and enhance security measures. The maritime border between Iraq and Kuwait has been a particular point of contention, with both nations working towards a definitive agreement to demarcate their maritime boundaries. This has involved high-level meetings and technical discussions aimed at resolving these issues.

However, Iraq’s recent legal reversal of a key maritime agreement has introduced uncertainty into its relationship with Kuwait, emphasizing the need for diplomatic and legal rectifications. This development reflects the broader challenges in maintaining stable relations and security along their shared borders.

Both countries have expressed a commitment to resolving these border issues amicably, highlighting their efforts to enhance cooperation and ensure regional stability.
