On Sunday, Kuwaiti authorities announced the arrest of a significant drug smuggling network comprised of five individuals, including a customs official.
The arrest followed an exchange of gunfire, highlighting the dangerous nature of the operation.
According to Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior, security forces seized a substantial amount of illicit substances from the network.
The confiscated items included 27 kilograms of hashish and marijuana, 200 capsules of psychotropic substances, 15 kilograms of unidentified materials, 34 bottles of alcohol, and unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The arrested individuals consist of a Kuwaiti customs inspector, two Syrians, one Indian national, and two stateless residents known locally as “bidoon.”
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that these individuals would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for legal proceedings.
In a statement, the Ministry of Interior underscored their commitment to combatting drug trafficking and ensuring the safety of the country.
The ministry also released a video on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), showing the intense exchange of gunfire between security personnel and the suspects.
Kuwait, like many countries in the Gulf region, faces significant challenges related to drug trafficking.
The country’s strategic location makes it a transit point for narcotics moving from production areas in Southwest Asia to markets in Europe and beyond.
