Jordan’s athlete Omar Qarada achieved a historic milestone by winning the country‘s first-ever gold medal in the 49 kg weightlifting competition at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Qarada’s triumph came after successfully lifting in all three attempts, recording a weight of 176 kg, which positioned him atop the global rankings.
His Royal Highness Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II, the Crown Prince of Jordan, extended his congratulations to the Paralympic champion.
He expressed his pride and joy on his official Instagram account, posting a photo with the caption: “Congratulations to our champion Omar and Jordan on this great achievement.”
This gold marks Qarada’s fourth medal at the Paralympic Games, following a gold at Tokyo 2020, a silver at Rio de Janeiro 2016, and another silver at Beijing 2012.
His qualification for the Paris Paralympics was secured after winning gold at the World Cup held in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Thanks to Qarada’s performance, Jordan now ranks 52nd in the medal standings, tied with nations such as Saudi Arabia, Namibia, Peru, Slovenia, Costa Rica, and Bulgaria. China leads the medal table with a total of 135 medals.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are scheduled to conclude on September 8th, marking the end of a highly competitive and inspiring series of events.
In March, France implemented security screenings for up to one million individuals ahead of the Paris Olympics, including athletes and those residing near critical infrastructure.
