Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has warned that cutting aid to Syrian refugees in Jordan will exacerbate their suffering, emphasizing that this responsibility lies with others and not with Jordan.
In a tweet, Safadi stated that “By August 1, WFP will cut vital subsidies to Syrian refugees in Jordan. Other UN agencies & some donors are doing the same,” stressing that “Jordan will not be able to fill the gap.”
Safadi indicated that Jordan seeks to consult with host countries in the region to hold a meeting aimed at developing a joint response to the decline in support for Syrian refugees from the World Food Programme and other donors.
He emphasized the necessity of taking measures to mitigate its impact.
He pointed out that Syrian refugees in Jordan will suffer, and this responsibility does not fall on Jordan but on those who cut off support to them, as the country cannot bear this burden alone.
He called on the United Nations to work towards enabling the voluntary return of Syrian refugees, and until that is achieved, he stressed the importance of maintaining sufficient support.
