The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates strongly condemned the targeting of a United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) staff member, who an Israeli sniper in the occupied West Bank shot.

This incident adds to the ongoing violations by Israel, which have resulted in the deaths of 220 UNRWA employees in Gaza.

Jordan emphasized the need for accountability for these crimes and ensuring that those responsible do not escape punishment.

A spokesperson for the Ministry, Ambassador Sufyan Qudah, reaffirmed Jordan’s strong rejection of this act, labeling it a serious violation of international law, including the Geneva Convention on the Protection of Civilians in Times of War (1949) and relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2730 (2024), which pertains to the protection of humanitarian workers and UN personnel.

The Ministry underscored the necessity of safeguarding civilians, providing vital infrastructure that provides essential services to Palestinians, and providing humanitarian facilities and shelters.

The Ministry also called for an immediate halt to the dangerous escalation carried out by Israel in the West Bank and the continued assaults on Palestinian land.

Jordan warned that the situation in the region could further deteriorate if Israel’s violations in the West Bank and its aggression in Gaza persist.

Jordan reiterated its call on the international community to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities by compelling Israel to cease its ongoing violations and aggression in Gaza and to address the dangerous escalation in the West Bank.

The ministry stressed the importance of providing necessary protection to the Palestinian people and taking serious action to fulfill their legitimate rights, including freedom and the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
