Jamaica has officially announced its recognition of the state of Palestine, as confirmed by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith.
Following discussions in her country’s Cabinet, Smith stated that Jamaica continues to advocate for the two-state solution as the only viable option to resolve the long-standing conflict, ensuring Israel’s security and supporting the dignity and rights of Palestinians.
By recognizing the state of Palestine, Jamaica reinforces its call for a peaceful solution.
She clarified that the decision aligns with Jamaica’s strong commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, which seeks to foster mutual respect and peaceful coexistence among nations, in addition to recognizing the sovereignty of international law and the right of peoples to self-determination.
Smith explained that concerns about the war in Gaza and the escalating humanitarian crisis, along with the government’s call for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through diplomatic dialogue rather than military actions, were discussed.
She reiterated Jamaica’s support for an immediate ceasefire and increased access of humanitarian aid to Gaza, particularly for women and children who suffer daily.
She also noted that her country supports all efforts to de-escalate and achieve lasting peace in the region, urging all parties to consider the dire consequences of further conflict and commit to diplomatic solutions that ensure their safety and sovereignty.
With Jamaica’s recognition, the number of countries recognizing the state of Palestine rises to 142.
