In a statement delivered on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani asserted that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and NATO is imminent.
However, Tajani emphasized that Ukraine cannot join the military alliance while engaged in a conflict with Russia.
“The message to Russia is very clear: Ukraine will be a member of the European Union, and then we are working to have Ukraine as a member of NATO,” stated Tajani, underlining the significance of Ukraine’s European integration.
Nevertheless, he cautioned against NATO membership for Ukraine as long as it remains entangled in a military confrontation with Russia.
Tajani stressed the need for prudence, highlighting the potential global consequences. He asserted that a full NATO member involved in a conflict with Russia could escalate into a scenario reminiscent of World War III.
The delicate situation calls for careful consideration and diplomatic efforts to ensure a peaceful resolution before Ukraine can fully join the military alliance.
