An Egyptian court has sentenced a young Italian man to life imprisonment, equivalent to 25 years, for possessing a significant quantity of drugs in New Cairo.
The Cairo Criminal Court found the Italian national guilty, following which his lawyer, Shaaban Said, announced plans to appeal the verdict.
Said expressed intentions to request either a pardon allowing his client to return to Italy or a reduction of the sentence to be served in his home country.
After the sentence was handed down, the lawyer assured the Italian’s family that efforts were being made to bring him home, highlighting the complexities of legal proceedings involving foreigners in Egypt.
Foreign nationals facing legal issues in Egypt often encounter severe legal consequences, especially in cases involving drug charges.
Egypt’s strict drug laws can result in harsh sentences, including life imprisonment or even the death penalty for substantial offenses.
The case echoes other high-profile incidents, such as the case of Giulio Regeni, an Italian student who was tragically murdered in Cairo in 2016.
Regeni’s death drew significant international attention and strained diplomatic relations between Italy and Egypt, emphasizing the challenges and sensitivities surrounding legal and diplomatic engagements between the two nations.
The current case may similarly attract international scrutiny, potentially impacting diplomatic relations depending on its outcome and the subsequent legal and diplomatic maneuvers.
