In a recent escalation on Syrian territory, a series of powerful explosions rocked Kafr Sousah street in the capital, Damascus.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the consecutive blasts were the result of Israeli airstrikes aimed at carrying out an assassination operation. The targeted building was known to be frequented by Hezbollah leaders and the Revolutionary Guard.
Official media confirmed that Israel launched several missiles at the residential area of Kafr Sousah, resulting in two fatalities and two injuries.
Kafr Sousah is recognized for housing numerous security agency headquarters and was previously targeted by an Israeli attack in February 2023, which resulted in the death of Iranian military experts.
Over the past two months, Israel has intensified its attacks on Syrian soil, particularly around the capital, targeting locations housing Iranian fighters and Hezbollah elements. These strikes have led to the death of several advisors from the Revolutionary Guard, marking significant blows to Iran.
Since the beginning of the current year (2024), the country has witnessed approximately 13 Israeli attacks, according to the Observatory.
Israel seldom publicly acknowledges conducting strikes inside Syria, despite repeatedly affirming over the years that it will not tolerate any Iranian threat on its borders.
The increase in these strikes comes amid a general state of tension in the region following the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
The conflict has spread to the Lebanese border with Hezbollah involvement and extends to Iraq and Syria, where Tehran-aligned armed factions are also present, reaching as far as Yemen.
The Iran-backed Houthi group has launched a series of attacks against commercial shipping vessels purportedly heading to Israel and has fired rockets and drones towards Eilat in southern Israel.
