Israeli naval vessels opened fire today, Saturday, on Palestinian fishing boats, using both bullets and water hoses off the coast of Gaza City, according to an official statement by the Union of Fishermen Committees. The Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported that Israeli military boats targeted the fishing vessels in the western regions of the Sudanese and Al-Waha areas, northwest of Gaza City, and attempted to sink them by flooding them with water hoses.

The agency added that the Israeli naval forces systematically target fishermen in Gaza’s waters daily, hindering them from practicing their profession and disrupting their lives. The Israeli forces also seize Palestinian fishing boats and arrest fishermen. Additionally, the Israeli authorities limit fishing areas, particularly during any turbulence in the eastern arena. The Gaza Sea becomes a focal point for Israeli intervention amid concerns of subsequent security developments.

The Palestinian Fishermen’s Union accused Israel of arbitrary actions, including “pursuits, arrests, boat confiscations, and fishing equipment bans.” The aim is to evacuate the sea of fishermen and end this profession, which employs over 5,000 fishermen in more than 1,000 boats, supporting more than 50,000 members of the community. The union says that fishermen also contribute to the Palestinian community’s economic security.

Israeli authorities have imposed strict restrictions on fishing off the coast of Gaza, claiming efforts to combat smuggling attempts across the sea within its blockade imposed on the sector since mid-2007.

The Israeli naval forces’ actions come amid longstanding tensions between Israel and Gaza, particularly affecting the fishing community. The restrictions and attacks on Gaza fishermen have socio-economic implications for a population already under blockade since 2007. The sector provides not just employment but is also a vital part of the Palestinian economy, reinforcing the community’s struggle for economic survival. These incidents add to the complexities and challenges facing Gaza and its residents, drawing international attention to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
