Israel warned on Thursday of a “disproportionate response” if Hezbollah attacks civilians or military bases in the central region of the country.
The Hebrew news site “Walla” reported that senior Israeli officials are concerned that Hezbollah might target Israeli military bases in the central region and have conveyed to the United States that if Israeli civilians are harmed in such an attack, the Israeli military’s response will be disproportionate.
This warning comes as the American news network CNN reported on Wednesday, citing two sources described as knowledgeable about the intelligence, that Hezbollah appears poised to attack Israel independently of Iran.
Last week, Israel targeted a senior Hezbollah leader, Fouad Shaker, in southern Beirut.
A source added that Hezbollah is “moving faster than Iran in its planning and is looking to attack Israel in the coming days.”
At the same time, it appears that Iran is still determining how to respond to the killing of the political bureau chief of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, according to officials who spoke to CNN.
The second source said that Hezbollah might act without prior warning, a scenario not applicable to Iran due to Lebanon’s proximity to Israel as a direct northern neighbor.
The source added that there is no clear coordination between Hezbollah and Iran at the moment.
