The Israeli military announced a substantial operation along the Egyptian border early Thursday morning, aiming to prevent a significant and high-quality drug smuggling attempt. Israel’s Channel 14 reported that following an extensive chase from the previous night, soldiers from the Fahd Battalion successfully thwarted the smuggling of approximately 50 kilograms of drugs valued at 2 million shekels.
The Hebrew television network emphasized that the Egyptian border has not been tranquil. In recent years, the Israeli military has conducted intensive operations along the southern border with Egypt to counteract drug smuggling.
The channel further highlighted that the Egyptian border region has become rife with drug smuggling attempts, with authorities intercepting drug trafficking nearly daily. The Israeli military’s surveillance units identified several suspects attempting to move drugs from Egyptian territories to the Harif region of the Paran Brigade area.
According to the Israeli army, smugglers on both sides use all-terrain vehicles. Those on the Egyptian side carry large quantities of drugs on their backs. Another team places ladders on the border fence, allowing those from the Egyptian side to climb and toss drugs to the other side.
The report continued: Smugglers on the Israeli side, primarily affiliated with crime gangs from both the north and south, arrive in sophisticated all-terrain vehicles up to the border fence with Egypt. They collect the drugs thrown over the fence using their vehicles and jeeps and then rapidly evacuate the area, exploiting the challenging terrain and extensive border.
