Chinese citizens using digital map applications like “Baidu” and “Alibaba” recently discovered that the name “Israel” is completely absent from their maps.
According to the American news network “Fox News,” when users of “Baidu” maps type “Israel” in the search bar, the application redirects them to the surrounding countries and cities near Israel’s borders but does not display its name. In contrast, the names of the neighboring countries such as Jordan, Egypt, Cyprus, and Syria are clearly visible.
China has a history of modifying maps to align with its interests. In recent months, it has redrawn maps in an attempt to assert its claims to disputed territories with India and Malaysia.
In August, India formally objected to China’s so-called “2023 Standard Map,” which claims sovereignty over certain areas within India.
The Fox News report suggests that China’s strong ties with Iran could be a reason for Israel’s absence from Chinese digital maps. China remains Iran’s largest trading partner, and Iran is a primary source of funding for both Hamas and Hezbollah, two groups that actively oppose Israel.
On Wednesday, China condemned the targeting of civilians in Gaza and emphasized the importance of protecting Palestinian civilians and humanitarian relief workers while respecting international law.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying stated, “Over 60 UN employees, more than 100 medical workers, and over 8,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza bombing, which goes beyond the right to self-defense.”
She added, “Every country has the right to self-defense, but international law must be observed when exercising this right.”
She called on “all parties concerned to fully implement the UN General Assembly resolution, adhere to international law, especially international humanitarian law, cease fire, stop acts of violence, and find solutions that contribute to peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel.”
