The terrorist organization ISIS has claimed responsibility for recently opening fire on Shiite worshippers in a mosque in western Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of six people.
The organization stated in a statement on the Telegram app that one of its members attacked a “Shiite temple” in the Herat province with automatic weapons.
The attack, which occurred on Monday evening in the Guzara area, left one person injured in addition to the fatalities, and the attacker fled the scene.
Local media reported that the mosque’s imam was among the dead. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack, saying that “this terrorist act goes against all religious and humanitarian standards.”
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan also condemned the attack, stating that a child was among the victims.
They called for the urgent prosecution of the perpetrators and measures to protect the Shiite community.
ISIS’s branch in Afghanistan is a rival to the Taliban and often targets schools, hospitals, and mosques belonging to Shiite communities in the country.
